My blog is going to be about the holidays I go on and fun times I have with my family. I would like to be able to look back on the special times I've had and have a way to remember those moments. I am also starting this blog so that my friends and extended family will be able to see what I am up to :)

Cruising in style

Friday, 30 March

We woke up in Athen's Heritage House. I had a quick shower and then we ate breakfast (fruit salad and toast). We finished packing our bags and then Nikos (taxi driver) came and picked us up. He drove us down to the Piraeus Harbor and we saw our cruise ship (Louis Cristal) docked there. We had to go through the long process of handing in our bags (they put them outside your room), checking in and going through passport control. The nice thing was that once we were through, we could immediately board the ship and go to our rooms.

Me and Ash are sharing a room. We have a little seating area, 2 beds, a bathroom with a shower, cupboards, a desk and a small fridge. We are very pleased with it! Our room is on deck 4 and mom and dad have the room next door. As soon as we got here we started unpacking our bags and settling in. We each have an electronic card to open the door. You also pay for everything on that card (room service!) There is a telephone in the room and you can dial the room number you want to call. That is really cool- we can talk to mom and dad over the phone!

After we had settled in, we went to reception to sort out a few things. Then there was a safety drill, where everyone had to go to their assembly station wearing their life jackets and they told you what to do in case of an emergency etc.

After that we went up onto the top deck, where we watched as the boat pulled out of harbor. By then we were getting hungry, so we went to the pool area to have lunch. They had a pasta bar where there were two guys and you told them what you wanted in your sauce (mushrooms, bacon etc), whether you wanted the creamy or the tomato sauce and which type of pasta you wanted. Then they whipped up your pasta for you. It was amazing! The only bad thing was that everyone on board had also had hunger pangs at the same moment as us and so we had to wait in a long queue to get our food.

After lunch both me and mom went and had a nap (we were exhausted- mom thinks it is because we took seasickness tablets and one of the side effects is drowsiness) When I woke up, me and Ash went and explored the ship. Then we came back to fetch mom and dad, and showed them the coffee lounge that we had found on the top deck. They both had filter coffee and I had a Fanta. Ash and I decided to come back to the room. I read a bit and then Ash and I played Black Jack.

When we were finished mom and I went and looked at their (tiny) gym. I went on the treadmill first and then we swapped. While mom was on the treadmill I did the stepping machine and the ice-skating machine. Then I had a shower and washed my hair.

We went to dinner at Caruso restaurant on deck 5. We ate a delicious buffet dinner. Once we had finished, we went to see the theatre that they have on board. They were doing some singing and dancing, but I was very tired so I came back to our room and went to sleep.

Circling the city

Thursday, 29 March

This was the day to squeeze in everything we still wanted to do in Athens! Here's what we did:

* Had a slow start and ate an English breakfast (fried egg, bacon, mushrooms, tamato and fresh bread.)

* Saw the Roman Agora

Wind Tower

Public latrines!

* Went to a cafe, ordered what we thought was a Meze platter and got a bowl of stew

* Wandered through the Plaka area and I bought a beautiful pair of earrings

* Went to a restaurant for lunch (I got a hamburger)

* Walked up to the new Acropolis museum. That was very interesting

* Went for dessert at a restaurant called Chocolat. I ordered a brownie, Ash got a chocolate waffle and mom and dad shared a plate of loukoumades (mini donuts- without the hole) It came with a wonderful view

* Came home and read (finished my book)

* Mom & Dad had done washing earlier in the morning and so dad did ironing (Oma is 7000 KM away!)

* Ate dinner: Piece of chicken, potatoes and Greek salad

Into mainland Greece

Wednesday, 28 March

We had a very quick start to the day because Nikos (who drove us from the airport) was going to pick us up at 8:30 and drive us around to some historic sites out in the countryside. (That's why I only posted my blog later in the day) When I woke up I washed my hair. Then we had a snappy breakfast of Coco-pops and a loaf of brown bread that dad had bought the previous day. Nikos arrived and we were off!

With Nikos and his taxi

We drove for about an hour and as we were driving he was telling us some interesting info about Greek history etc. We arrived at our first destination, which was the Corinth canal that joins the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf. We got out and crossed over the bridge (the canal is 8 meters deep!) Then we got back to where Nikos was waiting with the car.

We carried on driving and he asked us whether we would like to see a shop that sells pottery. We said yes and as we walked into the shop, one of the owners showed us how they make the pots. It is a family business and she is the third generation. They make all the pottery by hand, using the techniques that the ancient Greeks used. Many of their pieces are museum copies and it tells you this on the bottom of the piece. We then looked around: mom bought a pot, Ashlyn bought earrings and I bought a little jewllery box that is a museum copy.

We carried on driving until we reached ancient Corinth (the city that Paul wrote Corinthians to) Nikos told us to try not be longer than an hour because we still had lots more to see. We first looked at the ruins outside and then went to look in the museum.

Our next stop was Mycenae. This is the ruins of a palace complex and tombs dating from 1700-1100 BC (!!!!!!!!!!) I really enjoyed looking through the museum and then walking up to the palace ruins. We saw the Lions gates and found out that the relief above them (of the lions) is the oldest relief in Europe!

We got back to Nikos and he drove us a little further to where we were going to see a tomb. There was a tour bus just behind us and we were lucky to get there just before them, because we could look at it by ourselves for a few minutes. It is a Thalos (beehive) tomb and it is called that because the roof slopes slowly inward, in the shape of a beehive.

It was almost time for lunch and Nikos asked us if we wanted to try souvlaki. This is like a pita filled with the meat of your choice and tomatoes, onions, chips and tzatziki sauce (Greek yogurt with cucumber) We have been wanting to try it so we definitely said yes! We bought 2 each and then he drove us up to the Palamidi castle, which was our next stop. this is a huge Venetian castle built between 1711 and 1714. It has 7 different forts, each designed to withstand the enemy. You were allowed to walk through and explore it, which is exactly what we did (after lunch) We first ate our souvlaki (we had to sneak them into the castle) They were delicious! We ate them looking out over the sea (the castle is built on a hill, so it has fantastic views)

Then me and Ash went off and explored the forts. It was so amazing- there were doorways and steps leading to all sorts of unexpected places. It was just like you would read in a book. That was definitely the high of the day for me and as you can imagine, Ashlyn absolutely loved it!

Exploring every nook and crannie

After that, Nikos said he could "put the cherry on the cake" for us. He brought us to a Greek ice-cream shop! I had 2 scoops: Kinder (like a chocolate) and Cookies. Yum!

He then drove us all the way back to our apartment (I fell asleep in the car) I posted my blog and then read my book. We then went out for dinner to a very nice place near Monastiraki square. We had Mousaka and the waiter also convinced us to try something sort of similar to Mousaka but with macaroni inside. I preferred the Mousaka (it was amazing) but it felt good to be adventurous!
